MERITS OF THE FIRST TEN DAYS OF DHUL-HIJJAH
July 18, 2020
All praise is due to Allah, and prayer and peace of Allah be upon the master of all the Messengers. It is Allah’s favor upon us that He made seasons for His righteous worshippers to increase in their pious deeds.
In this article, we want, at Anjum Hotel Makkah, to share the importance of first 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah. There are some evidences about their virtue that were mentioned in Quran and the Sunnah, some of them are:
- Allah Swears an oath by 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah, and swearing an oath by something is indicative of its importance and great benefit. Allah says (what means): “By the dawn and by the 10 nights (i.e. the first 10 days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah) …” [Qur’an 89: 1-2]
- Ibn ‘Abbaas, Ibn Az-Zubayr, Mujaahid and others of the earlier and later generations (RA), said that this refers to the first 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah. Ibn Katheer, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: “This is the correct opinion.” [Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 8/413]
- The Prophet (PBUH) encouraged people to do righteous deeds because of the virtue of this season for people throughout the world, and also because of the virtue of the place - for the pilgrims to the Sacred House of Allah.
- The Prophet (PBUH) commanded us to recite a lot of Tasbeeh (“SubhaanAllah”), Tahmeed (“Al-hamdu Lillaah”) and Takbeer (“Allahu Akbar”) during this time. ‘Abdullaah Ibn ‘Umar (RA) reported that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “There are no days greater in the sight of Allah and in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Him than these 10 days, so during this time recite a great deal of Tahleel (“Laa ilaaha illAllah”), Takbeer and Tahmeed.” [Ahmad]
- These 10 days include the Day of ‘Arafah, on which Allah perfected His Religion. Fasting on this day will expiate for the sins of two years. These days also include the Day of Sacrifice, the greatest day of the entire year and the greatest day of Haj, which combines acts of worship in a way unlike any other day.
- It is Sunnah for a Muslim to fast on the first nine days of Dhu’l-Hijjah, because the Prophet (PBUH) encouraged us to do righteous deeds in the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijjah, and fasting is one of the best of deeds, which Allah (SWT) has chosen for Himself. It was narrated from Hunaydah ibn Khaalid from his wife, that one of the wives of the Prophet (PBUH) said: The Prophet (PBUH) used to fast on the first nine days of Dhu’l-Hijjah and the day of ‘Ashoora’, and three days each month, the first Monday of the month and two Thursdays.
When the world is ready to travel again, we, at Anjum Hotel Makkah, will be waiting for our pilgrims to grant them the warmest hospitality and best Umrah and Hajj journey.
